This portrait turned out to be one of my favorite commissions I've ever done! I showed a preview of this pup, Mr. Marvin, a few days ago and I am proud to say his portrait is now complete:
When I create custom paintings, I create what I call "practice paintings" in the beginning. These are created digitally and emailed to my clients as a way for them to get a feel for how the finished product will turn out. Here are some of the practice paintings I sent to Marvin's human:
He wanted a "booze inspired portrait" since his pup was turning 21 is doggie years. He also told me he was a fan of Pop Art and to let that influence how the painting would turn out. I had fun experimenting with different beer bottles and styles before we decided on the classic 21 year old beverage - Natty Light :)
I do these "practice paintings" for two main reasons - 1) They help my clients to envision how the product they've invested in will turn out & 2) It helps me to feel confident that once I start on their full scale piece, they will be happy with the results.
I've been doing custom artwork for over 9 years now (crazy!!) but I've only started doing these practice paintings in the last couple and I have to say I wish I had started sooner! It is a HUGE time saver and makes everything run smoothly.
