Since no introduction I'd make could possibly equal that of Mister Flo Rida, I'll leave him to it:
Well ladies and fellas, I am so excited that you're here! I've been planning "#TheHowardHome Tour for months now!! While Ben and my home is not EXACTLY where we want it to be, and let's be honest, it never will be, because...well have you ever been to this blog before? ;), I wanted to share all the DIY's, the Before & Afters, details on where to get the BEST deals, and some of the little things that make our home special and my favorite place to relax!
I thought it would be fun to divide up the tour into three parts, today is Part 1 and focuses on COMFORT! So I'll be showing our bedroom & the family room!
EEEEK!! Not quite sure what I was thinking there. Poor Ben. Poor walls! So much of the wrong shade of peach. So much bad bedroom set up. Yucky yucky yucky.
It took A LOT of gray to cover up that peach (sources HERE), but it was so worth it! I am also proud to say that I painted that mural back in November and I'm still not sick of it! That's a big deal for me.
I refinished both of our nightstands. Ben's (above) was from IKEA and after some paint, fresh hardware and some upholstery nails to give it character, I'm really happy with it! Ben likes it because it has so much more storage than the teeny tiny one drawer nightstand he had before. Details on how to DIY HERE!
If you've been keeping up with the blog over the last couple of weeks you'll probably remember this little 1960's cutie. The piece was in fantastic shape so personalizing it was a breeze, and I loved it so much I kept it for myself. Makeover was done using DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint, all the details to DIY are HERE!
This vanity is my newest makeover (just finished it yesterday!!), thanks to DecoArt's GORGEOUS new Metallic paint. I'm obsessed. A blog post completely dedicated to how to DIY is coming very soon, complete with supply list! This vanity was given to my mom when she was a little girl by her parents, and the fact that she gave it to me means so much! Not only is it loaded with sentimental value, but I seriously love everything about it! I'm a sucker for swirly furniture, plus it plays off of our bed frame really nicely. Stay tuned for that DIY post coming soon!
One of the newest things I'm most excited about in our bedroom is this mirror! We didn't have a large mirror in here for a long time, the issue was cost - large mirrors are SO EXPENSIVE! Then Ben and I decided to makeover our master bathroom and that's when I realized we had a perfectly good (but clearly hideous) mirror already! So we took it down and I painted it bright white and Ben hung it up for me. Since it was a beast and weighed who knows how much, it had to be hung a little off to the side to keep it on the studs, so I hung a couple small sketches to the left to balance it out.
All of the art you see hanging is for sale! Click HERE for pricing.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand now for THE FAMILY ROOM!
The Family Room - Before:
Ben did such a great job painting this room! I still love that color. I whitewashed the fireplace using DecoArt Chalky Finish paint in Everlasting, all the details for that are HERE.
I can't even remember how many stores Ben and I went to before we decided on this couch from Bassatt. All I know is that it was totally worth it because I'm still in love. So much comfy! And speaking of comfy, this rug is soo soft! We snagged it from Home Depot, I think it was $129? Which is roughly 50% less than anywhere else we looked.
View of the fireplace from our couch. One of our newest decor additions is the candelabra that Ben's awesome Grandma got us for Christmas. Since candles can be a little pricey, my solution was to put a few white bud vases in with baby's breath. The drawing above the mantle was something I made in college, based off of Norman Rockwell's piece, "The Flirts", flanked by pretty mirrors and inexpensive & simple decor.
I LOVE decorating the mantle. My sweet sister in law, Emily, got me that mirror for Christmas this year from Amazon. The little vases and candle holders are from the Dollar Store. I painted the candle holders with DecoArt Chalky Finish paint in "Everlasting" ( as well as the mirror to the right of the drawing) so make them show up more. I got those beautiful mint ombre candlesticks from Michaels. They were crazy cheap, I think $3 for the set!
And I'll end today with one of my favorite spaces in the house, and one of the first things you see when you walk in - our reading corner! This love-seat, as well as our coffee table and end table, all from World Market was generously given to Ben and I from my sister and her husband when we lost all of our furniture due to mold destroying almost everything in our first apartment. I like to think of it as a symbol of Ben and my strength as a couple, that while we watched our things turn green, we remembered that things are just things and to take a deep breath. Okay, Ben remembered this, and reminded me kindly while I cried constantly over chairs, our kitchen table, our mattress, and many other things that still bring tightness into my chest when I think about how they were ruined. Yuck. Okay, rant over. Just another reason why Ben and I love our house so much, and why I will always be grateful to the family and friends who helped us move in and move out (five times over the course of about a year and a half) and gave us beautiful things to make our house a home. We are so lucky. <3
Tomorrow I'll be sharing two more rooms in our #thehowardhome. Stay tuned! :)
