I wonder if ever there will be a day when I write a blog that is cuter than this one...
My most recent request for a custom painting came from a very talented photographer, Kristin Partin. She asked me to make a painting of her ridiculously adorable bunny, June, and provided the above photo for me to reference. She said she wanted to give the painting as a gift to her husband, and I let the cuteness overwhelm me like the time my sister sent me this picture of her son:
So back to June.
After I saw the photo Kristin sent me, I knew I didn't want to make this painting on a canvas. Sometimes there are subject matters that require you to use a surface that is just softer than canvas, a surface that is perfectly smooth. So I drove off to Plaza Art in search of claybord. Claybord looks like this:
When I got to Plaza, the size I needed (5x7") only existed in panel form, which means it doesn't have the cradle/wood part that makes it have more presence on the wall. So I purchased some wood to make my own cradle, something I hadn't done in 5 years! Fortunately since my main man, Ben, builds guitars, he had all the supplies I needed. So I cut the wood, lined it up, glued it down and painted the edges a dark gray to compliment June's gray-ish brown ears!
After the panel was made I decided on a pale sage-like green for June's background. Here you can get a better look at just how smooth the surface of claybord is. There's nothing like it. If you're a painter and you haven't painted on claybord - go buy one TODAY. You don't have to prime it and it's seriously like butter. I'm obsessed.
Next came working on June herself. I wanted to make sure she looked as soft as possible, so I used Golden brand's Zinc White a lot, which is about as transparent a white as you can get. It forces you to make lots and lots of layers, giving June the fluffy fur she deserves!
After giving her a comfy green pillow to sit on, I let her dry, packaged her up and tomorrow she'll be on her way to Kristin!
I know this is different from my normal style, but this was such a fun commission! I would love to do more like it! If you're curious about cost, it's $65 for a 5x7" painting with a handmade 1/2" cradle. All I need to get started is a 50% deposit ($32.50) and a photo of your favorite pet! You pay the rest once it's finished. Fill out the contact form below if you're interested in having one of your very own, or getting one as a gift for a friend!
