Last night was one of my favorite nights ever! Our friends, Ellen & Kyle, surprised me with a ticket to see Jenny Lewis at the National as one of the most wonderful birthday presents of all time!
It was the kind of night where your heart fills up with the sound of the bass and your brain forgets the stresses of life and you connect to something that just feels right. Besides the horrendous valley-girls who paid $35 to yell at each other during the entire intro to "A Better Son/Daughter", I'd rate last night as a 9.8 on a scale of zero to perfection.
It had been a long time since I've been to a concert and way too long since I'd seen Jenny Lewis live (last time I saw her she was still in Rilo Kiley). She is one of the most talented performers I've ever seen, and last night also renewed my love for the venue, The National.
The National is awesome. Did you know it was built in 1923? Or that it was used to show movies until 1983 when it closed for almost 20 years? Well now it's obviously reopened and it's doing pretty great, showing amazing bands like Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, Head and the Heart, and a bunch more. In college I went to see Motion City Soundtrack there as well as Jack's Mannequin. Both were great shows and so much fun, but Jenny Lewis was by far my most favorite. Observe her beauty:
