Did you know "Giving Tuesday" is a thing? Like Black Friday & Cyber Monday, but... the opposite because it focuses on generosity and giving to charities and families, rather than getting the best deals for Christmas gifts. Well this is the first year I've heard of "Giving Tuesday" and I have to say, it's very convenient that it's today because I was already planning on announcing how much money was raised for the Alzheimer's Foundation of America through my fundraiser this year! I've mentioned my annual fundraiser it in a couple blogs during the month of November, but in case you missed out, here's the deal:
For the last five years, each November I've been donating a portion of my art related profits to the Alzheimer's Foundation, in honor of National Alzheimer's Awareness Month. I call the fundraiser "Remember Me" because the first year I did this back in 2011, I was given a grant with a fellow student at VCUart school to create an installation that focused on Alzheimer's disease. In my research I was disturbed to discover that by 2050, one out of every 85 people will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. In recognition of this tragic illness, I wrote the proposal for "Remember Me", an idea for an installation of 84 portraits of friends and family displayed in a family room atmosphere that would force others to realize the tragic nature of Alzheimer's and it's ability to steal a person's identity. I split the task of drawing 84 people with Virginia Wood, a fellow Painting and Printmaking student at VCU, while Reni Gower (faculty member of the Painting and Printmaking department) helped us write the proposal. In the fall of 2010 we were awarded the Undergraduate Student Art Grant from Virginia Commonwealth University to bring our idea to life. I drew 42 of the 84 portraits, and each was for sale. All proceeds went directly to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America to further research and in hopes of finding a cure.
The exhibition was shown in 2011 during November, which is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, in two locations. First was Rick's Custom Frame + Gallery in Richmond, VA, the second was the Student Art Space (a student run gallery at VCU). The fundraiser raised over $1,000 for the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Each year since then, I've donated a portion of my art related profit each November to the Remember Me - Art for Memories Fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. Thanks to purchase & donations by these wonderful people:
Tim, Tyler, Alyssa & Amanda Meighan
Laurie & Tom Park
Tom & Nancy McCloskey
Tom & Laurie Park
Petersburg Home for Ladies
We've raised $603.57! $177.67 was this November alone! :) Not to mention the over $1,000 raised in Remember Me's first year!
It's predicted that 1 out of every 9 people aged 65 & older has Alzheimer's in the US. That's SCARY guys. To learn more & donate, click HERE.
