I absolutely LOVED doing this furniture makeover!!! You guys, this new paint from DecoArt is seriously magical. It took just two coats to completely transform an entertainment center that is currently pushing 30 years old! If you love painted furniture, and/or the color grey - you are going to looove this :)

Supplies

  • Drop Cloth
  • Sand paper
  • Paint Brushes (1-2" and one small brush for detailing)
  • DecoArt Americana DECOR Stain Blocker/Sealer (can be purchased at Michaels)
  • DecoArt Americana DECOR Satin Enamels in "Smoke Grey" (can be purchased at Michaels)
*OPTIONAL: A fan - it will really speed up your drying process!

Color Options Below:

Step 1

Flip your furniture upside down. This will save you so much frustration when it comes to painting the lowest part of your piece. If it's heavy be sure to get a friend to help you! Then (and this is not totally necessary, but I'd rather be safe than sorry) lightly sand your piece. I used an old piece of sandpaper and just did small circles throughout. Took just a couple minutes and helped me feel confident that the paint wouldn't peel.

Step 2

Be sure to wipe off any dust (a damp rag is great for this) and apply a coat of Stain Blocker/Sealer to each space that you plan to paint. My client and I agreed that it wasn't necessary to paint the interior shelves, so I left those spots alone.

Step 3

Now is the fun part!! It's time to shake your jar of Satin Enamels and apply your first coat to your piece of furniture. Immediately you'll notice an improvement! This paint covers so well, and also dries incredibly fast!

Step 4

This is when the fan comes in handy. This paint dries very quickly, but even more so with some extra air flow. I was able to do a second coat on the bottom half of the piece and flip it over and apply the first coat to the top very quickly.

Step 5

The bulk of your work is done! Now it's time for the finishing touches. I sprayed the hardware a bright white to cover up the aged brass and it turned out adorable! Be sure to double check the small detail areas and make sure no wood is showing through! Now all that is left is for you to practice that patience for a little bit before topping it with your favorite decor, your TV, flowers, etc!

This paint has a satin finish, which gives it a very fresh and clean look. Plus it is SUPER SMOOTH! It's really so soft!

How many jars of paint did you use to paint the entertainment centre

Hi Daine!
It just took one jar, and there was a little left at the end of the project. I think putting down the coat of stainblocker helped a ton, because it kept the original color from seeping through. The Satin Enamels really covers beautifully. Saves a ton of time!
