A few months ago, a friend of mine from high school - Tom - commissioned me to make a custom painting for his best friend, Ethan, & his fiancee, Nicole, as a wedding present for them. I was so excited because I was friends with Ethan in high school too and getting to make a wedding present for him and his bride would be so fun!!
Tom told me there was a photo he knew the couple loved from when they visited Ireland together and then he gave me artistic liberty to make something I thought they would like. When I get to this point in a commission, I always create what I call my "Practice Paintings". I make 1-3 simplified versions of potential paintings that my collectors can choose from and tell me what they like/dislike about each one. This way when I get started on their final painting, we know we're both on the same page!
Here is the photo he sent me to reference:
My first Practice Painting was simple and only included the castle:
The second Practice Painting was a lot more detailed and showed more movement in my drawing style, and the couple looked a little cartoon-y :)
The third Practice Painting referenced something I created in Photoshop using the "Cut Out" tool:
I got started on the final painting, which was done on my all-time favorite surface to paint on - Claybord.
I got to use so many bright colors for this painting!
I had so much fun painting Nicole's sweater. Those dinosaurs are so adorable :) I think it's safe to say Ethan and Nicole's clothes are the stars of this painting #PigglyWigglyForLife .
Close up of the final painting:
The final completed painting, created on 20 x 30" claybord using acrylic & ink:
I wish this cute couple so much happiness in their marriage and I'm so thankful Tom reached out to me to make this for them :) I think he deserves to win the award for most unique wedding gift! What do you think?
