I've been working on this room for roughly....forever. Or at least, since Ben and I moved into our home back in March. Basically, way too long. We moved from a two bedroom apartment to a three bedroom home, and I converted the dining room into my office, so that along with my studio means I have TWO rooms all for my business, yet the studio has been consistently OUT OF CONTROL. Seriously. Look at these pictures, so much crap. Ick. Yuck. Barf!
Embarrassing, right? Well NOT ANYMORE! After realizing that in order for this room to not look like hell, I had to stop rearranging and start trashing, donating, and selling - I finally have this:
A functional work space!! Here's how I got there.
Having great storage was a must. You might remember this computer desk-turned-hutch, from THIS post, I decided it would serve a better purpose by holding my large paintings & sketches. Shout out to Grandma for that awesome floor lamp! :)
I realize the storage boxes and bins under the desk aren't the perfect solution, but for now I think we can all agree this is quite an upgrade from the hoarders "before" room. Also, having two desks is AMAZING. One of them is actually my vanity, I put my makeup on in here now which frees up space in our bedroom and offers another surface to draw on :) That little table next to it was about $25 from IKEA and the legs are super easy to remove so it's very convenient when I'm doing an art show and need an extra table to display my work.
How my desk looks right now! :)
Having my paints and pencils and the items I use most frequently out and ready to go had increased my productivity like CRAZY! I got these little containers at the dollar store, they're actually votive holders :)
Some of my work, including an abstract I made that all of our wedding guests signed (watch the timelapse video for that painting HERE), plus some art by one of my favorite artists :)
Portraits of Ben and me by my very talented nephew/ Tuckercookie :)
I got this storage cabinet from Target, and that divider on the bottom shelf is from Target as well. It's been great having a place for all of my paints! Well, most of it... ;)
So there you have it! Of course nothing is ever really finished in our house. I plan on replacing that ceiling fan with a much less intrusive light fixture, anyone else out there HATE ceiling fans? I'm also planning on getting curtains that reach the floor, and painting the three cream walls a pale gray or white. But for now I am sooooooooooo happy to have a fully functional work space!! :) PS How AWESOME is that lamp?! My friend Grace gave it to Ben and I as a housewarming gift, she painted it herself!! It's the coolest!
Want to know my biggest secret for how I got this space clean after MONTHS of putting it off? Ben put a TV in it! It's embarrassing but for some reason having the TV playing The New Girl or Parenthood or Frasier or whatever show I'm binge-watching at the time - made me want to be in that room! It made cleaning more fun, and even made painting more fun! I was in a really big creative rut there for a while, which makes a lot of sense when your work space is completely covered in bags of unfiled papers and candle holders. But now that the space is clean, I'm making more art than I have in a really really long time!
Having my illustration of Hogwarts helps keep me motivated too. Never know when that letter is gonna show up...
So what space are you hoping to beautify in your home? How are you going to go about doing it? I'd love to see before & afters of your favorite spaces! Share in the comment sections below :)
