Friday morning I stopped by my favorite thrift store, Diversity, in Richmond and found this lovely ladder back chair. It was in great condition, no cracks or worrying wobbliness, just an ugly cushion and a need for a fresh paint job. I happily purchased it and brought it home.
I had just received a shipment from DecoArt, containing Americana chalky finish paint in "Relic" which is a gorgeous gray, along with a satin varnish. I knew I was going to be using the paint to refinish two dining chairs that Ben surprised me with - so I thought this chair would be a good opportunity to try the paint color out and see how it fit in our dining area! The weather was gorgeous that day so I brought my chair outside on our back deck to begin painting.
I removed the cushion, poured out some of the paint on a paper plate and began covering the chair. Without needing to prime or sand, the paint stuck straight to the chair beautifully!
After fully coating the chair, Ben and I looked at it for while. We decided it was missing something, so I decided to give it a white wash, using American chalky finish in "Everlasting" which is a crisp white, and stenciled a small flower using the same paint. It was getting closer to being finished but it was still missing something.
I decided to warm it up a little by dry brushing Americana's "primitive" chalky finish paint, and covering it with a light layer of wax in "deep brown". This gave the chair a weathered and aged look. The next step was adding the varnish to keep the chair protected and give it a nice satin sheen.
The last step was completing the cushion. After sitting on it, I realized how much it needed more padding to make it more comfortable. So I added an inch of fresh padding, and covered it with fabric. I changed my mind on the fabric multiple times, but finally decided on a different striped pattern!
And finally - here's the finished product:
I think the striped cushion brightens it up :) How do you like the way it turned out? Comment below!
