Last night I went to my first "Tuesday's Together RVA" meeting, hosted by the Rising Tide Society, a group of creatives that value community over competition. In the spirit of community, I thought I would change up the blog post for today and share a site where you can learn about 109 different artists whose styles range from fantasy sculptures to spiritual videography:
Introducing (for the first time on this site) : art21
your totally free source for documentaries on contemporary artists & exhibitions:
Check out one of my favorite videos about William Kentridge, the South African animation artist. Below is the trailer, full video is HERE.
"I am only an artist. My job is to make drawings, not to make sense" - Kentridge
I hope you find a new artist that interests you on this site. I go through phases of looking at a lot of artists work, comparing myself to them, learning from them, getting inspired and sometimes jealous of them, It's hard for me to tell if this is healthy or not. It was great getting to be around so many creative people last night and hearing that they are in the same boat, feeling intimidated by other artists, wishing they had the perfect routine, the perfect clientele. No matter how successful the artists were they all seemed to be saying the same things. We concluded that each person just needs to listen to their own heart and mind and know what works best for them, taking inspiration where you can and trying to resist the need to compare/guilt yourself into thinking you're not doing your best.
How often do you look at other artists' work/the work of others in your field? Does it inspire you? Make you feel insecure or motivated? I'd love to know what you think in the comments below!
